Folk – The Town Musicians of Bremen, Megan Wisdom & David Gunawardana

4th January - 20.00 Book

olk at the Maltings welcomes the new year with a concert featuring performers from a wide range of backgrounds, The Town Musicians of Bremen, Megan Wisdom and David Gunwardana.

The Town Musicians of Bremen is a newly formed folk trio which, for reasons the musicians will explain on the night, takes its name from the Grimm Brothers story of the same name, but the trio actually comes from Worcestershire, rather than Bremen in Germany. The are Andrew Lowings on bouzouki, Leon Gormley on guitar and cittern and Lewis Jones on nyckelharpa and melodeon. Playing with soul, humour and dexterity the Town Musicians of Bremen produce sounds which are equally traditional and contemporary and immensely enjoyable.

Megan Wisdom is a folk musician and singer of traditional songs. Born and bred in Suffolk, Megan has been attending pub sessions for as long as she can remember, which has provided the foundation for a warm, simple style which resonates throughout her performances. She loves to explore the stories which are deeply etched into British folk music and bring out the voices from the past which are alive within lyrics and melodies. She won the long-running Suffolk traditional song competition, the Percy Webb Memorial Cup, in 2015, was a New Roots finalist in 2017 and has gone on to sing at major festivals such as Sidmouth Folk Week.

David Gunawardana has commented that it’s hard to say where he comes from as his family is from Sri Lanka and he comes from London. He sings a mixture of English traditional songs and his own material, telling beguiling tales of far-off forest glades, caves and towers, happy tribes challenged or dancing spirits. His first EP, ‘Figures and faces’ is due out on January 16.

Tickets: £12, Students and concessions £11. Under 18 £7.50
