Company of Players
Join us for an evening of Shakespeare and song, with OVO and The Company of Players!
Award-winning folk supergroup The Company of Players is the brainchild of Jess Distill, member of rising local trio Said The Maiden. Founded in 2016 — the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare — the ten-piece, multi-instrument group set out to celebrate the playwright’s life and works through the creation of original music, all inspired by the words of Shakespeare.
The album of songs, written and performed by some of the best emerging artists on the UK folk scene (Said The Maiden, Minnie Birch, Chris Cleverley, Lukas Drinkwater, Sam Kelly, Daria Kulesh, Kim Lowings and Kelly Oliver) is out now. And this collaboration of The Company of Players with OVO — who marked the 2016 anniversary with St Albans’ first Shakespeare Festival — is a unique opportunity to enjoy the songs, played live, alongside performances of the texts that inspired them.
