The Maltings Arts Theatre
The Maltings Arts Theatre is a lively, buzzing fringe venue in the centre of St Albans providing high quality performances at affordable prices and a platform for the best local creative talent.
The Maltings has been a part of St Albans’ cultural scene for the past 30 years, building a rich heritage and providing a home for scores of live performance events that might otherwise have struggled to find a stage. Many of the great performers of the last three decades have appeared at the venue – from Eddie Izzard to Steven Berkoff, Red Shift to Stan Tracey.
Originally run by St Albans City and District Council, OVO took over the management of the Maltings in 2011 at a time when the theatre’s future looked bleak following several years of declining audiences and cuts to local authority budgets.
Over the past five years a largely volunteer team has rejuvenated the venue’s fortunes whilst simultaneously reducing its cost to local taxpayers by 90%. The innovative partnership between OVO and St Albans City and District Council has been nationally recognised as an example of best practice in the field of community led arts provision.
OVO has made significant improvements to the theatre’s facilities with a fresh, contemporary look for the foyer and bar, the addition of cinema quality film projection equipment, major upgrades to lighting and sound and, most recently, a complete reconfiguration of the auditorium creating much greater flexibility for performances and events.
The theatre’s output and audience has also grown substantially with over 5,000 visitors and 100 live performances in the last year, spanning a range of modern and classic drama, youth and children’s theatre, blues and folk nights, dance, opera, chamber music, poetry and comedy.
The Maltings Arts Theatre aims to provide a platform for the very best local and up and coming performers, as well as more established nationally acclaimed drama and music including, most recently, Propeller Theatre Company and Jacqui Dankworth.
So save yourself a trip to the West End and come and sample the artistic delights right here on your doorstep. We look forward to welcoming you along!
OVO manages the Maltings on behalf of St Albans City and District Council and is the theatre’s resident producing company. For more information about OVO visit our website.
